korea is on its way to developing technology to launch a rocket at the united states's west coast and hawaii. officials tell cnn that the working assumption is that the north koreans got outside help from others, including iran. so today's launch is raising some huge concerns. let's go to our pentagon correspondent barbara starr. i assume they are pretty surprised and alarmed by the successful launch over at the pentagon? >> look, wolf, because of everything you just mentioned, indeed, the u.s. military, the intelligence committee have been watching north korea for days now 24/7 because they did expect to launch and they announced it. but they were having technical problems so a lot thought it wouldn't happen until next week. when it happened last week, there was a surprise. the north korean anchor's excitement was clear. >> announcing the launch of a long-range rocket that put a north korean satellite to orbit around the earth. they clearly achieved one goal raising everyone's anxiety level. >> this is a step towards the ability to build a long-range missile that could strike par

was a document that described the procedures you would use and the specific technology that you would need to do so, so the big question is how would he know all that? he spent more than 20 years in the navy. he worked in the intelligence field. he was a submarine warfare specialist. he had not only a top secret clearance, but also authorizes for what's called special access, which limits the amount of people who can view highly sensitive material. he had that access. he hadn't been out of the navy for more than a year when fbi agents started tracking him and set up this sting and this undercover operation, and that's how they caught him. >> we know if there was any classified information that was actually released? >> reporter: no. there were never actually any real russian agents, so to speak. these were all undercover agents, b it is very, very serious. i mean, the navy will almost always tell you exactly where their carriers and surface ships are located in any given moment. they never reveal the location of the submarine. that is a highly classified part of the u.s. navy. he faces life in p

find out? >> reporter: modern technology really is a blessing sometimes. that's right. as we were talking i got an e-mail from senator demint's office explaining in part the answer to your question which is why is he leaving and he says that he's not leaving the fight. he says he decided to join the heritage foundation at a time when the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas and he says no organization is better equipped to lead that fight and he thinks his experience in public office and private sector has helped him there. he says that speaking to constituents and bringing this obviously on the fly that he says that has told them time and time again that being in the senate was never going to be his career. he came to congress as a citizen legislator and is determined to be that and that's why he'll continue that fight. obviously there's a republican governor in south carolina who will appoint the next senator -- >> successor. >> reporter: thank you. in terms of power it shouldn't change anything. it will be an important and very powerful conservat

comments online? >> we're seeing another information where technology has outstripped the law. you know, in the past to get published in a newspaper, to get widespread distribution of your complaints against somebody, very hard. you have to get a newspaper to take you seriously. they have to have a big readership. now you just go online. i was reading one account that said yelp has as many as 83 million visitors to the sites. you can literally destroy a business by posting negative things about the business. it's tough on the businesses. they have very little recourse. the communications decency law that protects angie's list and yelp from being sued. they can say, hey, we're just a forum. if people want to post, they can post. the only thing a business can do is sue, saying you defamed me and i'm going to sue you for money damages. suits like this will scare people from posting on the internet and we'll have less free speech and less exchange of ideas and people kind of like the fact that you can go on the internet and check people out. so this is an evolving area of the law. i think y
